Back

This was a day of heat and demoralizing hills. I will take the hills over the mountains any day, however. The temperature got up to 101 degrees. I met Lawrence Woods who lives in the United Kingdom just south of Birmingham. He is having some pretty serious knee problems. Starting from the east coast put him in the mountains within days of starting his ride and the ride to the crest of the Smokey Mountains on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a very hard start. He is self employeed so he was able to just take off and do this trip which he hopes to complete in about two and a half months. We visited for a long time along the side of the road.

This bridge is just beautiful. It is out in the middle of nowhere and I am guessing it is easily more than 100' high and the spans between the pillars is at least 200 or 300 feet. It is an engineering and architechtural marvel.

The bridge above is a far different than the one below.

It was so nice to ride on roads with no traffic today and then I rode for a long way on this road which had a bike path. I haven't seen one of these in a thousand miles.

Here is some of the wildlife I saw on the isolated roads I was on today. The buzzards are feasting while the little fawn is separated from its mother. The mother jumped over a fence when I rode up and the fawn ran into a blueberry thicket which had a fence in it. Isn't it cute?

There is about a foot of very clear water in this stream which goes by this abandoned grist mill.

There are some beautiful rivers in western Virginia.
