Back

I got a late start this morning. There was a continental breakfast at the motel and I got to talking too much and before I knew it, it was almost check out time. I was planning to go to Carbondale which was 40 miles east and that is all I did. It was nice to ride on relatively flat ground again. The big crop in this area is corn. I like to smell it as I ride alongside it. It was hot again and I stopped to get a soft drink and the lady at the store told me a better way to get into Carbondale and I was very grateful to her.

There are a lot of coal trains in this area and also barges which carry coal.

Kyle and Matt were sitting on the side of the road when I approached them. I thought they were having bike problems but they were just taking a break. They attended the University of North Carolina and are both architects. They quit their jobs to do this ride and Matt will be going back to school in California at Berkley. We visited for a while and said our goodbyes.
It is only five or six miles from Murphysboro to Carbondale. I got caught in a downpour again. It only lasted five minutes but at least it wasn't cold. I was ready to call it a day and am happy it was a short day.
