Grandpa Lost His Mind
A Journal - Crossing America by Bicycle

June 9, 2007      Miles 54      Total miles 2418      Ended at: Nickerson, Kansas

I love going through the small towns and seeing the old, old buildings. This one was built in 1887. In the northwest most of the old buildings were very western and most of them were constructed of wood. I am surprised they have weathered all the years.

In Oregon, this would have been a very common scene. Here, in Kansas, I don't see too many old abandoned houses like this. I like them because they are interesting to see and I always wonder about the age of the house and what life was like in them many years ago.

The oil pumps, which dot the landscape in Kansas, pump the oil into holding tanks. Here is a truck unloading one of the tanks. I expect the owner of the land will get a very nice check for this.

These two pictures were taken in Sterling, Kansas. It is a very nice town. The picture on the left is a courthouse in the town square and the one on the right is on the Sterling College campus.

There is a beautiful city park in town where a lot of people were spending their Saturday afternoon.

My wife worked a twelve hour shift last night then drove to Nickerson to meet me. We stayed at a bed and breakfast on the outside of town which was very nice. We had a great visit. We had not seen each other for seven weeks. We went to eat at Applebee's in Hutchinson. Do you like her hat?
